After breakfast, you'll embark on a journey to Mary, the city that serves as a gateway to Ancient Merv. En route, you will stop to visit the ruins of the Seyitjemaleddin Mosque and the ancient trading city of Abiverd. Upon arrival in Mary, you will explore the UNESCO World Heritage site of Ancient Merv, known as "The Pearl of the Seljuk Empire." The day begins with a morning drive from Mary back towards Ashgabat, followed by a journey into the Karakum Desert. Your destination is the Darvaza Gas Crater, famously known as the "Gates of Hell." The drive will take you through stunning desert landscapes, with stops at smaller mud and water craters. In the evening, you will witness the spectacular sight of the eternally burning crater at sunset and under the stars. A traditional nomadic-style BBQ dinner will be enjoyed near the crater, and you will spend the night camping in yurts or tents for a truly immersive desert experience.
